A lot of the boys in my son’s JK class are getting their summer haircuts. Which apears to be the good ol’ buzz cut.
Jack has had long hair forever, but he proudly announced when he came home last Friday that he wanted his ‘head shaved’ for summer. I just nodded, “that’s nice, dear”. Thinking nothing of it. Then Saturday morning, he said it again. “I want my hair like Austin and Jaiden, Mommy”. His face was very serious and I knew I couldn’t just dismiss it. So off we went to First Choice downtown.
We sat down and I showed him a book with different haircut. What about this Jack? No. What about this? No. This one? No. None of the cute styles would do. Jack only wanted his head shaved.
Mike just put his hand on my leg (a bit firmly) and reminded me of my own parenting advice: it’s his hair and his choice. There’s nothing dangerous about it. So I bit my tongue and my lip and sent him off to the lady with the clippers.
Turns out, my five year old was right. IT LOOKS AWESOME! And I don’t think I’ve ever seen that look of self satisfaction on his face before. Thanks Mike for reminding me to back off. Thanks Jack for sticking to your guns. And thanks to the emergency c-section, turns out he has a perfectly round head
