Yesterday was a HUGE day for Star Wars fans everywhere, because we got the FINAL trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens! Fans had been clamoring to get one last look at the film before it opens in theatres on December 18 and the trailer totally delivered! After what seemed like the longest first half of a football game EVER, the trailer debuted during Monday Night Football. and made its way online soon after. The trailer gave us another glance at the scope of the film without spoiling the plot or showing too much. It gave just the right dose to hold us off until December. We saw (and heard) new characters like Rey, Finn and Kylo Ren; we saw familiar characters like Chewbacca, Princess Leia, and Han Solo (no Luke yet, but he’s in the film). And at the end of those 2 and a half minutes, Star Wars fans all felt the same thing: we’re home.
I was too young to see the Original Trilogy in theatres, I was born in August of 1983 – 3 months after “Return of the Jedi” opened. Thankfully my dad had seen them on the big screen, and knew that once I was old enough he would show me the films. I don’t remember when I first saw them, they’ve always just been there in my mind. Other than the Back To The Future trilogy and perhaps Batman ’89, no other films have impacted me more than Star Wars. I love Star Wars because it made me love sci-fi, fantasy and genre stories, and it made me love movies even more. It fired my imagination and it continues to do so. In the late 90’s, all 3 original films were re-released in theatres as “Special Editions” which was my first time seeing them on the big screen. A few years later, I was among the throngs of fans who waited in line for the prequels. I got suspended for two weeks in highschool (I won’t tell you why) and my parents were cool enough to let me go see the midnight screening of “Attack of the Clones” I had tickets for before they grounded me for life. They knew how much Star Wars meant to me, and if the worst thing your kid is doing late at night is going off to watch space epics, than I guess he’s not so bad. I love Star Wars so much, even the prequels are alright in my books (and that’s a BIG statement to make!)
Some people have been wondering what all the hype over this new Star Wars film is all about. See, the thing is that when Star Wars fans walked out of “Revenge of Sith” back in 2005, we all thought that it was the last time we’d see a new Star Wars movie. George Lucas said time and time again that he would not make any sequels and for many years it seemed like that was going to hold. We’d only have six Star Wars movies and that would be it. Things changed in 2012 when Disney bought Lucasfilm and revealed that they were going to make the mystical long awaited Star Wars film- EPISODE VII! The news blew my mind fifty different ways and has created an excitement that only Star Wars can provide.
Three years later and here we are – just under 2 months away from THE FORCE AWAKENS and it’s amazing. I now have my tickets purchased for the earliest showing on Fri, December 18. The only downside to working evenings is I can’t go to late night screenings because I’m on the air, but it’s ok! I will be patient and will be there ready to roll at 10am on Dec 18. Christmas is coming a little earlier this December, kids and it’s from a galaxy far, far away!
Here’s the trailer, see you at the multiplex in December!
