For decades, Lemmy Kilmister, Motörhead frontman and bassist, embodied the essence of rock n roll- morales, clothing, attitude, but most importantly the music. All Motörhead records exude that undeniable confidence of rock. Lemmy sang it himself in 1987: “Cause I’m in love with rock n’roll, satisfies my soul.”
Ian “Lemmy” Kilmister passed away at the age of 70 on December 28th, only two days after learning of the “extremely aggressive cancer.” The official Motörhead Facebook page posted this:
“There is no easy way to say this…our mighty, noble friend Lemmy passed away today after a short battle with an extremely aggressive cancer. He had learnt of the disease on December 26th, and was at home, sitting in front of his favorite video game from The Rainbow which had recently made its way down the street, with his family.
We cannot begin to express our shock and sadness, there aren’t words.
We will say more in the coming days, but for now, please…play Motörhead loud, play Hawkwind loud, play Lemmy’s music LOUD.
Have a drink or few.”
Friend, Rock God, Icon, Noble, Warrior, Legend. These words have been spoken from a kinship of rockers; everyone from Dave Grohl to Ozzy Osbourne to the fans themselves to describe Lemmy. Motörhead drummer, Mikkey Dee said, “Motörhead is over of course. Lemmy was Motörhead. We won’t be doing any more tours or anything. And there won’t be any more records. But the brand survives, and Lemmy lives on in the hearts of everyone.”
So now we pay homage to the rock icon. Blast your favourite Motörhead track and raise your glass.
