Being Santa Claus usually means spreading joy to children around the world; usually the only tears he has to deal with are from the odd toddler who’s unsure about sitting in the lap of a big guy dressed in red velvet and bushy white beard to a take a photo.
But on this day, Santa was called in to make his most important delivery of the year–to a dying boy who’s final wish was to see him–and it was the normally jolly St. Nick who was the one left in tears.
‘I sat down on his bed and asked, “Say, what’s this I hear about you’re gonna miss Christmas? There’s no way you can miss Christmas. Why, you’re my number one elf.’
He said the boy looked at him and asked ‘I am?’ before taking the toy that he could barely open because he was so weak.
The boy smiled, then said: ‘They say I’m gonna die. How can I tell when I get to where I’m going?’
He told the boy ‘when you get there, you tell them you’re Santa’s number one elf, and I know they’ll let you in.’
‘Santa, can you help me?’
They were his final words. The young boy had passed away in Santa’s arms.
