It’s the most common question I get from my daughter when I harp on her to do her math homework. “When am I ever going to need this????” That’s reserved for when she’s studying for an exam or she brings home a below average mark. My kid is smart. She excels in everything …. except math …. like her Dad. And as you can see HERE she’s not alone. Students in Hamilton (and elsewhere) struggle with math.
Here’s the thing. I find it increasingly difficult to answer her questions about the necessity of learning math. The Basics, of course, are essential and she will need them at some point in her life. Personally, I think the math curriculum needs to be more diverse. Leave the current one for those students who are mathematically inclined, and plan a career that requires it. Students like my daughter however, would be better served by a course in budgeting money, or financial planning, than algebra.
